Australian backpacker charged after killing toddler in bush

Police said the man from Victoria had been living in the property with his mother and his stepfather for about two months.

They said they had received a number of complaints from the community about the family and that the woman had previously threatened the couple.

“There was a confrontation that was very, very bad and I can tell you that she was extremely violent and she did make some threats towards the family,” Det Insp Mark Copley said.

“She has been known to be very violent towards her neighbours.”

It’s really hard to accept, especially when we live here,” she said.

Police have been called to the family home in North Brighouse in the north-western part of the state, about 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of Melbourne.

The woman was remand in custody while the man was taken to hospital for psychiatric assessment.
